We are seeking volunteers in the community that would like to pursue this opportunity in Brooklyn and Manhattan. If you, or someone you know, think you might be interested, we will be conducting training sessions top prepare our next group of volunteers.
Volunteer Responsibilities
- A time commitment of three hours each week or every other week.
- Represent Visiting Nurse Service of New York and the American Cancer Society when speaking with newly diagnosed cancer patients.
- Provide patients with a free wig fitting in their home with supplies provided by ACS & VNSNY
- Provide comfort, give hope and actively make referrals to ACS to assist cancer patients in accessing ACS programs and other services in the community.
- Complete a referral form for each person assisted and fax it to ACS.
Qualifications
- A good listener & comfortable speaking with people in their home.
- Medical clearance and screening by VNSNY (exempt for VNS employees that have this already).
- A one-time 3-hour classroom training by ACS staff where you will learn about the services offered by the American Cancer Society and receive instruction on how to fit someone for the right wig.
- Strongly interested in providing emotional and tangible support to patients diagnosed with a challenging illness.
